The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved the site plan for construction of a new fire station on Schoenherr Road, just north of 21 Mile.
“When we look at it, there is a definite need for an additional station and additional manpower because of the run volumes,” says Shelby Township Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski. “The original master plan back in the early 90’s, late 80’s, actually called for five stations.”
The new station — estimated to be 7,400 square feet — is expected to serve the southeastern portion of the township.
The money for this project comes from the fire department’s capital improvement fund. Construction is expected to cost $1.9 million.
“It’s already been baked into the five-year forecast,” says Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis.
Construction will likely be completed by the end of 2016.
